How Ductless Mini Splits Work
A mini split pairs an outdoor unit with one or more indoor units mounted in the rooms they serve. Refrigerant lines and wiring connect the indoor and outdoor equipment, so conditioned air is delivered directly into the room instead of through ducts.
Heating and Cooling in One System
Most mini splits are a type of heat pump. They move heat out of your home in summer and bring heat in during cooler weather, so one system can handle both heating and cooling for the spaces it serves.
Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone Systems
A single-zone system uses one outdoor unit and one indoor unit to condition one area. A multi-zone system connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit so different rooms can be set to different temperatures. The right setup depends on how many spaces you want to condition and how they are used.
Mini Split Repair
Schedule mini split repair if you notice:
- The system is not heating or cooling the room
- Water dripping from an indoor unit
- Unusual noises from the indoor or outdoor unit
- Error codes or blinking lights on the indoor unit
- The unit will not turn on or respond to the remote
- Ice on the outdoor unit or refrigerant lines
Mini Split Maintenance
- Clean or replace the filters in each indoor unit as the manufacturer recommends
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, debris and vegetation
- Watch for water around indoor units, which can signal a drain problem
- Schedule periodic professional maintenance so coils, drains and electrical connections are checked

When a Mini Split May Be the Right Fit
- Room additions or renovations where extending ductwork is impractical
- Bonus rooms, sunrooms or finished spaces that are hard to keep comfortable
- Homes or areas without existing ductwork
- Garages or workshops that need heating and cooling
Ductless vs. Ducted Systems
A central system moves air through ductwork to the whole home. A mini split delivers air directly into individual rooms. Homes with good existing ductwork are often best served by a central system, while mini splits are useful where ducts are missing, impractical or not reaching a space well.
