R-22 Air Conditioner Repair & Recharging in Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties

Older outdoor air conditioning condenser beside a home

Still Have an R-22 Air Conditioner? You May Have More Options Than You Think.

If your air conditioner uses R-22 refrigerant, you may have been told it needs to be replaced. That is not automatically true. Pappa Goose Heating & Air carries R-22 refrigerant and services existing R-22 air conditioning systems, including R-22 recharging, for homeowners throughout Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties.

Before replacing your R-22 system, get a second opinion from Pappa Goose.

What Is R-22?

R-22 is a refrigerant used in older air conditioning equipment, sometimes referred to as Freon. Many systems installed before 2010 were designed to use it. Modern refrigerants are not a simple drop-in replacement, because equipment is designed around a specific refrigerant.

What Changed in 2020

U.S. production and import of newly manufactured R-22 ended in 2020. That did not make existing R-22 systems illegal to use or service. Legally available existing supplies and properly reclaimed R-22 may be used to service existing systems, and the EPA does not require replacement solely because a system uses R-22.

Our R-22 Services

  • Diagnosis and repair of existing R-22 air conditioning systems
  • R-22 refrigerant recharging
  • Evaluation of refrigerant leaks before recharging
  • Honest repair vs. replacement guidance

Why We Evaluate Before We Recharge

Air conditioners do not use up refrigerant. A system that is low on R-22 usually has a leak. Simply adding refrigerant again and again without looking at the leak is rarely a good long-term approach. We evaluate the system so you understand what is causing the loss and what your options are.

Repair or Replace? What Affects the Decision

Every R-22 system is different. The right choice depends on factors such as:

  • The overall condition of the equipment
  • How severe any refrigerant leak is
  • The cost of the needed repair
  • Current R-22 availability and cost

Repair may be appropriate in some circumstances. In others, such as a severe leak or a major component failure, replacement may be more practical. Not every R-22 system can be repaired, and we will tell you plainly what we find. Learn more about AC repair and HVAC system replacement.

How to Tell Whether Your System Uses R-22

Check the data plate on the outdoor unit, which usually lists the refrigerant type. Installation year is another clue: systems installed before 2010 are more likely to use R-22. If you are not sure, we can confirm it during a service visit.
